The clinic may ask you for your health insurance information before scheduling an appointment to determine whether or not you can be seen in that clinic using your insurance. Check out the National Provider Directory to find a provider who accepts your insurance.
At some clinics, you may need to see your primary care doctor first for a referral to a specialist (e.g., Infectious Disease). If you already have a medical provider, you can call ahead and ask them if they prescribe PrEP or refer patients to a specialist. If they refer, you can ask for the referral over the phone and may avoid multiple appointments.
If you have health insurance through your parents, or spouse, you can still access PrEP medication and associated medical services confidentially through PrEP-AP at no cost to you. Contact a PrEP Center of Excellence to speak with a PrEP Navigator to learn more.
If you have high deductibles or co-payments, ask the clinic whether or not they can assist you in applying for the PrEP “Medical Assistance Programs” and other forms of financial assistance (if you are eligible) to reduce your costs.
For U.S. citizens or permanent residents, you can purchase health insurance through Covered California. If your income is low, you may be eligible for free or low cost health insurance through Covered California or Medi-Cal.
People who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents may qualify for full-scope Medi-Cal under certain conditions.
To find out which type of insurance may be best for you, visit one of our PrEP Centers of Excellence to speak with a PrEP Navigator or Benefits Enrollment Worker who can help you. They are available to help all clients learn about insurance options and patient assistance programs.
Some people can’t get insurance for reasons such as their immigration status, or they may be waiting for open enrollment under Covered California. However, PrEP is still available at low or no cost.
